I came into residential childcare with no real understanding of what the role involved. My only experience working with children before that was being a children’s rep travelling around Europe. After a few years of travelling, I reached a point where I felt it was time to settle down and get a “proper” job, even though I had no clear idea what I wanted to do. Somehow, I found my way into residential care, and 19 years later, I’m still here.
One of the biggest factors for me in this sector has been how much the children themselves give back. You go into this thinking you’re there to support and guide them, but the reality is they teach you just as much, if not more. I genuinely feel it’s a privilege to do what we do. We work with some truly amazing young people who show incredible resilience, humour, and strength, even on their toughest days. They’ve taught me a lot about patience, perspective, and what really matters in life.
I won’t pretend it’s always been easy; there have definitely been hard days, and I have been thrown a fair few curveballs along the way. But no matter what, I’ve always tried to show up, do the right thing, and keep the children at the centre of everything that I do. That’s what has grounded me throughout my career.
When I look back, I feel proud of the path I’ve taken, even though it started without much direction. I’ve had the opportunity to grow through different roles, starting as a Residential Care Worker and working all the way to where I am now, and each step has taught me something new. I have also been very fortunate to benefit from the support and guidance of senior management, which has played a key role in my professional growth and my ability to continue to do what is right.
What keeps me here, and what keeps me motivated, is simple: the people we look after. Knowing that you can make even a small difference in their lives, being there for them through difficult times, and seeing them grow and succeed – there’s nothing quite like it.
I honestly can’t imagine doing anything else.
