Aim: The objective of this qualification is to support learners in becoming emergency first aiders in the workplace. The content of the qualification meets the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland (HSENI) requirements for training emergency first aiders in those organisations that have identified that staff need to be trained to this level within their first aid needs assessment. The qualification covers knowledge such as the roles and responsibilities of the first aider and how to assess an incident. The qualification also covers first aid skills in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), providing first aid to a casualty who is choking and dealing with external bleeding and hypovolaemic shock, also how to provide first aid for minor injuries. In line with guidance provided by the HSE, the qualification supports/approves workplace emergency first aiders for a period of 3 years, after which point, learners will need to retake the course. Therefore, this qualification is valid for three years from the date of award. · 1.1 Identification of the roles and responsibilities of a first aider · 1.2 Minimising the risk of infection · 1.3 Identifying the need to gain consent · 2.2 The primary survey · 2.3 Summoning appropriate assistance · 3.1 Identifying when to administer CPR · 3.2 Demonstrating CPR · 3.3 Identifying when to place the casualty into the recovery position · 3.4 Placing a casualty into the recovery position · 3.5 Continually monitoring airway and · 3.6 Administering first aid to a casualty having a generalised seizure · 4.1 Identifying mild choking · 4.2 Administering first aid for choking · 5.1 Identifying the severity of arterial bleeding · 5.2 Administering first aid for external bleeding · 6.1 Shock: hypovolaemic shock (resulting from blood loss) · 6.2 Administering first aid for hypovolaemic shock · 7.1 Administering first aid for small cuts and grazes · 7.2 Administering first aid for minor burns and scalds.
Training Method: A variety of presentation skills include demonstrations, PowerPoint, discussions, and group work. Practical skills are demonstrated and practised (under close supervision) using continuous assessment methods by your trainer. Participants will then complete a 15 Question Multiple Choice test at the end of training where a score of 11/15 or above will need to be met for a pass. Please don’t worry if this isn’t met straight away as the trainer will partake in Further Questioning with the participant if required which will then determine if the participant Passes or is Referred. Please be advised that during the course various topics will be discussed including heart attacks and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. Should you need to leave the room at any point or speak to your trainer then please feel free to do so.
Safety Statement
Please let your trainer know if you have any physical problems that would disqualify you from participating in the physical portion of the course. Things that should make you consider sitting out of the physical session are, if you:
· Currently see a GP for a health problem or injury e.g. Shoulder, neck, knee, back
· Take medication for a heart condition, diabetes or high blood pressure
· Have recently had surgery or are waiting for surgery
· Have suffered a work-related injury
· Have brittle bones
· Are pregnant
All Participants are expected to complete 2 Minutes of CPR from the floor. Without this being successfully completed then participants cannot pass the course.
Suitable Attire: Casual clothes that provide freedom of movement. Comfortable flat shoes (e.g. trainers). You will be asked to remove watches and jewellery to reduce the risk of harm and damage. Nails must be trimmed and no longer than your fingertips (This includes not wearing fake nails).
The trainer will introduce practical techniques that represent what you would need to carry out in an emergency to be able to Preserve Life, Prevent Worsening and Promote Recovery. Skills are introduced with a live demonstration, practice and then assessment. In our experience it is very rare for a participant to be injured in these practice sessions. The trainer will do his/her part to keep you safe and ask that you do your part to keep yourself and others safe.
Identification Checking: It is the responsibility of the centre to have systems in place to ensure that the person taking an assessment is indeed the person they are claiming to be. All centres are therefore required to ensure that each learner’s identification is checked before they undertake the assessment. Highfield Qualifications recommends the following as proof of a learner’s identity:
• a valid passport (any nationality)
• a signed UK photocard driving licence
• a valid warrant card issued by HM forces or the police
• another photographic ID card, e.g. employee ID card, student ID card, travel card etc.
If a learner is unable to produce any of the forms of photographic identification listed above, a centre may accept another form of identification containing a signature, for example, a credit card.
