Emily Dupas: Growing, Learning, and Thriving in Care

The first thing that made me take my first step into care was that, after studying Health and Social Care at college, I wanted to help people who needed the support of others.

What surprised me most about working in care was that it is far more than just looking after a person with learning disabilities or difficulties. It is about ensuring they are supported in the most person‑centred way possible, enabling them to fulfil their lives in the least restrictive way.

When I think about choosing this career path, I feel amazing. I joined Hillview Farm back in 2018 as a Support Worker, eager to learn more and gain experience. During this time, I completed my NVQ Level 3 in Adult Care, and in February 2025 I applied to become a Senior Support Worker. At present, I have gained a lot of knowledge within this career, and the greatest thing is that I am still learning every single day. I always learn something new.

What keeps me going is that no day is the same, and how rewarding this job is – especially the feeling you get when you know you have made a difference to a person’s life. Whether that is supporting them to learn a new skill or develop one they already have, it is incredibly fulfilling, as well as improving the quality of life of the people we support.
