Jimmy’s Story: A New Chapter of Independence
Jimmy’s* journey to independence has been far from straightforward, following multiple serious head injuries, Jimmy experienced lasting difficulties including poor short term memory, cognitive challenges and reduced physical dexterity. Over the years, he also experienced significant mental health challenges and spent three years within the secure hospital system before eventually moving to The Grove.

A Home of His Own
Building Everyday Independence
Reconnecting and Moving Forward
After everything Jimmy had experienced, one ambition remained particularly important to him: to have greater independence and a home of his own.
When Jimmy came to The Grove, the focus was not on where he had been, but where he wanted to go next. Over two years, he worked alongside the team to rebuild confidence, strengthen everyday living skills and gradually take greater control of his own life.
How We Helped
With support from the team at The Grove, Jimmy began accessing the community independently, using public transport, managing his own finances and medication. Each experience provided another opportunity for Jimmy to build confidence in what he could do for himself. The team supported Jimmy to rediscover the things that mattered to him, reconnecting with important relationships, joining a gym, and enjoying overnight stays and trips with his family.
Jimmy has a passion for horticulture and continued growing his collection of plants during his time at The Grove. He was also supported to secure a voluntary placement with Headway, attending weekly and becoming a highly valued member of its volunteer team. His own experience of brain injury helped him connect with other people using the service.
As his independence grew, so did his confidence and self-esteem. Jimmy rebuilt positive relationships with members of his family and became more at ease in his life. His mother felt she had started to get the “old Jimmy back”, including the return of his sense of humour.
Looking Ahead
After two years of rehabilitative support at The Grove, Jimmy reached the goal he had been working towards and moved into his own flat within a supported living setting.
For Jimmy, the move represented much more than a change of address. It was the culmination of years of progress and an opportunity to enjoy greater choice and independence in everyday life.
Since moving, Jimmy has settled into his new home and put his own stamp on it. He is cooking for himself, going to the gym and continuing his voluntary work with Headway. He has also enjoyed new experiences, including a family trip to France.
“You have helped look after Jimmy so well and helped him get ready to move. He has a lovely flat and is enjoying it there. Thank you once again for all your care and kindness to Jimmy. We as a family really appreciate it.” Jimmy’s mother
