Simon's Story: Reconnecting with Education
Before joining Robin’s Nest, *Simon had been out of education for 18 months. Simon experienced anxiety around attending school and initially found entering the building and managing different parts of the school day difficult. After such a long period away from education, the team knew that his return needed to happen gradually, at a pace that felt manageable for him. Rather than focusing immediately on full time attendance, the priority was helping Simon feel safe, secure and comfortable within the school environment.

How We Helped
Simon’s transition was carefully planned in partnership with his parent. A structured transition plan and part time timetable were introduced, giving him the opportunity to become familiar with school life without feeling overwhelmed. Alongside this, Simon received ongoing pastoral support, while the team maintained regular communication with his parent and closely monitored his attendance and progress.
Consistency was particularly important, by providing a predictable, understanding and supportive environment, staff gave Simon the time and space he needed to build trust. A real turning point came when Simon developed a strong relationship with his teacher and began to feel safe at school. His engagement increased, he became comfortable staying for the full school day and, over time, progressed from his reduced timetable to sustained full-time attendance.
The Difference
Simon’s progress is about much more than attendance. Staff have seen positive changes in his confidence, friendships, communication and participation, as well as a growing willingness to try new things and engage more fully in school life.
One example of this can be seen in Food Technology. Previously, Simon would not take part in the activity, he is now participating and developing practical skills that can support his future independence. After spending 18 months out of education, Simon is now successfully attending school full time, with no unauthorised absences recorded during 2026.
His journey demonstrates the difference that a patient, consistent and relationship-led approach can make when a young person is given the right environment and support to reconnect with education.
Looking Ahead
Simon is a bright young person who hopes to have a good job and be happy. After 18 months out of education, he is now attending school full time, building relationships and taking part in activities he previously found difficult. With his confidence and independence continuing to grow, Simon is taking positive steps towards the future he wants for himself.
