Across Shropshire

Rural, sole-occupancy homes in the Shropshire countryside give distance from harmful networks, with Welsh and English-speaking teams and care regulated by CQC.

For children’s safety we describe the areas we support rather than naming individual homes or addresses. We also accept referrals from beyond Shropshire .

Common questions

Concise, evidenced answers to the questions professionals ask most about our Shropshire provision.

Who is the Shropshire Activity & Intervention service suitable for?

Our Shropshire Activity & Intervention service supports children and young people aged 11–17 who are experiencing a placement crisis or require a highly structured, therapeutic environment. We work with young people across Shropshire, Herefordshire, Powys and the wider Marches region, as well as referrals from local authorities across England and Wales.

Why is the Shropshire location beneficial?

Located in the heart of the Shropshire Hills and the Marches, our service offers access to beautiful countryside, woodland and outdoor environments that support young people's recovery from trauma. Being away from previous risks and negative influences can provide the space they need to reflect, build confidence and develop healthier coping strategies.

How long do young people stay?

Our core intervention programme is designed as a 90-day placement, providing intensive support to help young people stabilise, reduce risk-taking behaviours and prepare for a successful move into their next placement.

What outdoor activities are available in Shropshire?

The natural landscape surrounding our service provides opportunities for a wide range of adventure-based activities, including:

  • Hill walking and hiking

  • Mountain biking

  • Canoeing and kayaking

  • Climbing and bouldering

  • Woodland activities

  • Team-building challenges

  • Farm and countryside experiences

Every activity is carefully planned to help young people build resilience, confidence and trust.

What makes this service different from a traditional children's home?

Our service combines relationship-based residential care with structured outdoor intervention programmes. Rather than simply providing accommodation, we use challenging and rewarding experiences within the Shropshire countryside to help young people interrupt negative behavioural patterns and achieve lasting positive change.

Is the service safe?

Yes. Our service operates with 2:1 staffing, is licensed by the Adventurous Activities Licensing Service (AALS), and all activities are led by appropriately trained staff following comprehensive risk assessments.

Can you support young people at risk of child criminal exploitation (CCE)?

Yes. We have significant experience supporting young people affected by child criminal exploitation (CCE), county lines activity, child sexual exploitation (CSE) and other forms of trauma. Our specialist intervention programme helps young people recognise exploitation, build healthy relationships and reduce future risks.

Do you support young people transitioning from secure settings?

Yes. Our Step Toward Programme supports young people moving from secure environments or highly restrictive placements into community living. The peaceful rural setting of the Marches provides an ideal environment for rebuilding confidence while maintaining the structure and support they need.

What outcomes do you aim to achieve?

Our programmes are designed to help young people:

  • Build confidence and self-esteem

  • Improve emotional regulation

  • Reduce harmful and risk-taking behaviours

  • Develop positive relationships

  • Increase resilience and independence

  • Re-engage with education, training or employment

  • Successfully transition into longer-term placements

How quickly can a placement be arranged?

We understand that many referrals are made during times of crisis. Our referrals team works closely with local authorities to assess referrals promptly and arrange placements as quickly as possible where appropriate.

How do you work with local authorities?

We work collaboratively with social workers, commissioning teams, independent reviewing officers (IROs) and other professionals throughout each placement. Regular reviews and clear communication help ensure the intervention remains focused on achieving the best possible outcomes.

How do I make a referral?

If you would like to discuss a placement at our Shropshire Activity & Intervention service, our dedicated referrals team is here to help. We'll talk through the young person's needs, answer any questions and advise on the suitability of our programme.
