Common questions

Concise, evidenced answers to the questions professionals ask most about our Staffordshire provision.

Who is the Staffordshire Activity & Intervention service suitable for?

Our Staffordshire Activity & Intervention service supports children and young people aged 11–17 who are experiencing a placement crisis or require a highly structured, therapeutic environment. We work with young people from Staffordshire, the West Midlands and local authorities across England who would benefit from an intensive intervention programme.

Why is the Staffordshire location beneficial?

Situated within easy reach of the Peak District, Cannock Chase and the Staffordshire countryside, our service provides the ideal environment for young people to step away from previous risks and focus on their recovery. The combination of accessible outdoor spaces and peaceful surroundings supports confidence-building, emotional regulation and positive behavioural change.

How long do young people stay?

Our core intervention programme is designed as a 90-day placement, providing intensive support to help young people stabilise, reduce risk-taking behaviours and prepare for their next placement.

What outdoor activities are available in Staffordshire?

The surrounding area offers a variety of adventure-based activities, including:

  • Mountain biking

  • Canoeing and kayaking

  • Climbing

  • Woodland activities

  • Walking and hiking

  • Team-building challenges

  • Farm and countryside experiences

Each activity is carefully chosen to help young people build resilience, confidence and healthy relationships.

What makes this service different from a traditional children's home?

Our Staffordshire service combines relationship-based residential care with structured outdoor intervention programmes. Adventure-based activities are used as positive interrupters, helping young people break negative cycles, develop practical life skills and build trust with the adults supporting them.

Is the service safe?

Yes. Safety is at the heart of everything we do. Our service operates with 2:1 staffing, is licensed by the Adventurous Activities Licensing Service (AALS), and all activities are delivered by appropriately trained staff following comprehensive risk assessments.

Can you support young people at risk of child criminal exploitation (CCE)?

Yes. We have extensive experience supporting young people who have experienced child criminal exploitation (CCE), child sexual exploitation (CSE), county lines involvement, offending behaviour and other complex risks. Our specialist programmes are designed to reduce vulnerability while helping young people build safer futures.

Do you support young people transitioning from secure settings?

Yes. Our Step Toward Programme supports young people leaving secure settings or highly restrictive environments. The structured routine and outdoor intervention programme help young people gradually develop the confidence and independence needed for longer-term residential placements.

What outcomes do you aim to achieve?

Our programmes focus on helping young people:

  • Improve self-esteem and confidence

  • Develop emotional regulation skills

  • Reduce harmful and risk-taking behaviours

  • Build trusting relationships

  • Increase resilience and independence

  • Re-engage with education, training or employment

  • Successfully move into longer-term placements

How quickly can a placement be arranged?

We know that referrals are often made during periods of crisis. Our referrals team works closely with local authorities to assess referrals quickly and arrange placements as efficiently as possible where appropriate.

How do you work with local authorities?

We work in partnership with social workers, commissioning teams, independent reviewing officers (IROs) and other professionals throughout the placement. Regular communication, reviews and progress updates ensure the intervention remains focused on achieving the best outcomes for the young person.

How do I make a referral?

If you would like to discuss a placement at our Staffordshire Activity & Intervention service, our dedicated referrals team is here to help. We'll discuss the young person's needs, answer any questions and advise whether our programme is the right fit.
