Sunny Hill School is a specialist independent school for Learners aged 7–19 with complex and overlapping needs. We support learners with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), severe and complex learning needs, communication differences (including non-verbal communication), sensory processing needs, emotional regulation, and personal care and independence needs.

About the school

Sunny Hill is a specialist school. We support young people with:

  • Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties 

  • Severe learning difficulties and complex needs

  • High levels of cognition and learning support

  • Communication differences, including non-verbal communication

  • Sensory processing needs

  • Emotional regulation needs

  • Personal care and independence needs

Our learners often have multiple overlapping needs and require highly personalised support delivered through a specialist, holistic approach.

Our Learning Environment

Lessons take place in small classes 1:1   with personalised support for every learner. Teaching is carefully adapted to meet individual EHCP outcomes and is structured, practical, and engaging.

Throughout the school day, learners access a broad curriculum including:

  • Functional English and Communication

  • Phonics

  • Mathematics and Problem Solving

  • Creative Arts and Outdoor Learning

  • Physical Activities

  • Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)

  • Therapeutic and sensory-informed activities such as Sensology, Tac Pac, and sensory exploration

Our teaching approaches use repetition, practical experiences, and real-life contexts to help learners develop, practise, and apply their skills with confidence.

Supporting Regulation and Communication

At Sunny Hill, communication and emotional regulation are embedded throughout the school day.

Learners have access to a range of specialist spaces and activities, including:

  • Regulation Stations and Calm Zones

  • The Sensory Studio

  • Rebound Therapy

  • Outdoor Learning in the Discovery Garden

We are proud to be a Total Communication environment, where all forms of communication are recognised, valued, and responded to. We support learners to express themselves, make choices, build relationships, and develop their individual voice.
